FIVE (5) WAYS TO MAKE READING A FAMILY AFFAIR AND IMPROVE YOUR CHILDREN ACADEMICALLY

Charity begins at home as the popular saying goes but not only charity, education also begins at home. Love brings togetherness in a family which will contribute massively to families reading and enhance their children reading habits. Family plays an important part in helping children to develop their literacy skills and foster a love of reading.

It is obvious that families that read and learn together when all members of the family is at home, and it is being done consistenly, it will surely become part of families' daily activities that everyone must read at home everyday.

As heard, one of my lecturers in school said experience has shown that children tend to gain a lot when they read together with their parents because the learning process adopt seems comfortable to them and learn with happiness. In addition, parent-children reading habit is an avenue to expose them to new words and more complex words than they would experience on their own.

Moreover, frequent parent-children reading habit gives children strong belief that reading is both important and enjoyable. In order to help inspire and motivate children to read and improve their literacy skills, it is important for families to:

1. SPEND AT LEAST 30 MINUTES EACH DAY READING TOGETHER: Spending time with your child makes reading more interesting than him reading on his or her own. This is your family, sit together and read something side-by-side. Then, never forget to assess and evaluate your child by asking questions about what he or she has read so far.

2. SHOULD NOT BE FRUSTATING, MAKE IT FUN: Parent-children reading habit should not be irksome; it should be an undertaking and exciting experience. Reading together with your family should be an adventure, your attitude must reflect it. The learning process should not be harsh, it must fun and excited so that children can see the joy and happiness in reading books.

3. LOOK FOR BOOKS THAT YOUR CHILD LOVES AND THAT ALSO MATCH HIS READING LEVEL: Children tend to love and put more interest in some books than others. At this point, the selection of book becomes a critical component. Never test the ablities of your child with books that pass their level, find books that match their level. For a kid or young one, books with illustartions and picture demonstrations should be suitable to help them comprehend the comtext of any book.

4. UTILIZE FREE READING FEATURES: Think of games your families can play to help children love reading and become a better readers. Parent-children reading habits boost and support children to attain success both in the classroom and beyond school, and can also said to be a great way for families to share special moments and make memories.

5. REWARD YOUR CHILD WITH GIFTS: Gifts given to kids or young ones for doing something good tend to motivate them to put more efforts and become better at such thing. If your child is doing well, kindly reward him with gifts for his reading abilities; these gifts given to children boost their morals and motivate them to read more.

Take the bold step now, I want you know that it is never too soon or too late to read with your child.
