Procrastination is a thief of time is a popular saying which is used to either motivate or wake up people from a stagnant position in order to move forward. As a matter of fact, we all fall victim of this in one way or the other at a particular period or another.
Procrastination as a negative attitude makes you do the wrong thing at the right time. What you are suppose to do now instead you will be doing something else which is irrelevant. For example, instead of you working on a particular project or an assignment, you use that precious moment to watch series of programmes on television which has nothing to add positively to the project or assignment at hand.
If procrastination has turned to become a common or usual habit then it will surely have negative impact on such person's life. For a student it is poor grades, a trader low turnover or profit, and so on. You know this negative attitude called procrastination should be overcome. Breaking the procrastination habit is not easy but you can. How? The following five (5) points below will state how procrastination can be avoided or overcome.
1- MANAGE YOUR FEAR: Fear is one of the factors that contributes massively to procrastination. Fear as an agent of procrastination, fear of making errors or mistakes, sometimes even a fear of success. Whoever fears to risk or make mistake can never achieve anything or be rewarded. Firstly, manage your fear by addressing what stops you to start a task or assignment at the right time. If you can do that then you can start to avoid or overcome your procrastination habit.
2- CREATE A TO-DO LIST: Creating a to-do list of all the tasks at hand, that is, things you want achieve or accomplish makes the tasks easier for you. Making a to-do list if necessary with a date next to each task if there is a deadline you must meet. This to-do list keeps you on your toe and to remind you of a task to be done at the right time, in view of doing this you are either directly or indirectly avoiding procrastination.
3- BREAK DOWN YOUR TASKS: Creating a to-do list makes your tasks easier to be accomplished but breaking down your tasks into smaller or manageable segment makes everything easiest. Breaking down of tasks is very pertinent when you are faced with a big task because you might feel hopeless or intimidated, when you look ahead of the amount of work, stress or sacrifice involved. At this point, take individual items on your list and break them down into a series of steps.
4- RECOGNIZE WHEN THE PROCRASTINATION FEELING STARTS: Procrastination starts with a feeling. Recognize when the feeling comes in as you begin to tackle tasks on your to-do list. The feeling will be 'I will do it later' or 'I don't feel like do it now, I still have more time' then you should know that the feeling of procrastination has come. Instead of you giving-up, kindly force yourself to start the task and spend at least ten (10) minutes on the right task on your to-do list at that right time. Believe me, once you force yourself to start the task, you will see that it will be easier to accomplish because you have overcome that ugly feeling called procrastination.
5- ELIMINATE ALL SORT OF DISTRACTIONS: It is obvious that things cannot be get done when your environs is full of distractions. The urge to concentrate on tasks can be very difficult, especially when there are many factors around you to provide fun and entertaining distractions. It will be very hard to accomplish any task when you keep on checking facebook account minute-by-minute or watching television while executing a task. Find a period when all distractions tool will be off. No facebook update, no music, no watching of television, kindly focus and pay 100% attention on the task at hand.
